I recently shared a Black Panther workout based on Golden Era Bodybuilder - Serge Nubret. This time around I’ll be sharing a workout for Black Adam. Who is quite literally, in the comics, a magic Egyptian. So it’s only right that this workout is based on another Golden Era Bodybuilder. The Magic Egyptian - Mohamed Makkawy.
Black Adam
Whereas Black Panther is a Marvel hero, Black Adam is a DC Comics supervillain. Well, more or less an antihero. And the main antagonist of the Shazam story arcs. He was given his superpowers in ancient Egypt, by the ancient Eegyptian wizard Shazam. Yes, he’s that old. Like his counterpart Captain Marvel, when he speaks the word “Shazam”, he is magically transformed into a superhuman of immense capability. Unlike Captain Marvel, however, he is not granted the power of his predecessor. He is granted the power of a pantheon of Egyptian deities. That’s all a bit much to get into, though. This isn’t a nerd and fandom blog (yet), so you can learn a lot more in the “Further Reading” section at the bottom of the page. I just wanted to give you somewhat of a basic rundown of who Black Adam is and what he’s capable of for the sake of this workout. It’s also important to note that Dwayne Johnson was rumored to be Black Adam for a few years and within the past year/year and a half has been officially cast as Black Adam for the DCEU. So I will be doing a Black Adam workout inspired by Johnson’s insane regiment as we get closer to his DCEU debut.
Mohamed Makkawy
Mohamed Makkawy was a Golden Era Bodybuilder that may be a bit obscure to some of you guys. He was dubbed the Magic Egpytian. He was an Egpytian powerlifting champion and in was in that sport that he made his bones. He was arguably the most succesful bodybuilder of 1983 as far as titles go, and that was probably his most successful year. Like many (including my absolute favorite, Don Howorth) he was a disciple of Vince Gironda. As such he followed his legendary and revolutionary training protocols, most notably the 8x8 method. In an article I will link below, you will see just how insane his discipline and dedication was, especially around competition time. The Workout This will be a derivation of Gironda’s 8x8 method workouts. Gironda’s trainees didn’t just start out going balls to the wall, though. By today’s standards maybe. But as strong and fearless and Vince Gironda was, he did believe in pacing his acolytes. Even with the 8x8 method, there were levels to the splits that had to be progressed to. Remember that back then these guys 100% lived for this. Not because of YouTube and sponsor money. Not for instagram followers. But for the sheer love of the sport. The discipline. And the glory of gains. It pushed them. These guys were doing 8 sets in 30 seconds. And these are Gironda’s guys we’re talking about. So as popular as experimentation was back then, no juicing. Gironda was staunchly against gear. We’ll be following a beginner/intermediate style 8x8 workout. Use moderate resistance/progressions. And try to progress to using lower and lower rest times. Well within reason, though. Your only competition is yourself. The template is pretty self explanatory and changes can be made depending on your own level of strength.

Conclusion
It was only fitting to do a workout for a magic Egyptian based on the Magic Egyptian. As I said before, I will be doing a Black Adam workout specifically inspired by Dwayne Johnson, seeing as that’s one hell of a perfect casting choice (to some of us, at least) and he’s already an icon in fitness and bodybuilding. That one will probably be more strength oriented and utilize a different type of resistance. I love doing these Golden Era workouts. I know I’ll do many more in the future. Hopefully, I will be able to accurately fit them with superheroes and keep things fun and informative. When it comes to this workout, remember that Gironda was like Shazam the Wizard to many bodybuilders back then. And this was one of his sure fire methods for hypertrophy. But like magic, it’s formulaic. You have to follow it to a tee and be patient. If you want to read more about Makkawy, Gironda, and Black Adam - scroll down to the “Further Reading” section.
