The Justice League movie premieres in less than a month, and even though I already have a full roster of workouts for the Justice League (their billed cast, at least) I can’t help but throw in a couple more.
One that I’ve recently enjoyed is inspired by Batman’s fist ever ward - Dick Grayson. But not as Robin. As Nightwing. The perfect successor and heir to Batman in the DC Universe in every way, I figured he was deserving of the spotlight for a while.
Nightwing
Nightwing is the mantle that Dick Grayson took up as a young man. After leaving Gotham to go to Bludhaven for numerous reasons, he left behind the mantle of Robin. In many story arcs he all but leaves behind the Bat Family altogether. Though Nightwing is to Bludhaven what Batman is to Gotham, he doesn’t often face the same type of characters as his forerunner. However, he often faces the same types of threats on his own. As well as teaming up with Batman and other members of the Batman Family to overcome insurmountable odds. Dick Grayson chose the name Nightwing after speaking with Superman about what he should do with his life. He was at a point where he’d seen too much to still be Robin, but said that he was too optimistic to be Batman. When Superman told him about a man similar to him on Krypton, who was known only as Nightwing, that was the defining focal point in Dick Grayson’s life. Dick is at peak human condition. When it comes to fighting he is second only to Batman. And he’s regarded as the greatest acrobat in the entire DC Universe. His prodigal athleticism is primarily due to his time with his family’s troupe, The Flying Graysons, before their untimely demise - which he bore witness to. It was Bruce Wayne who adopted him and took him under his wing (no pun intended). This took all of the potential in young Dick Grayson and expounded on it, molding him into what would eventually become Nightwing.
The Workout
From the obscure training montages in the comics and animated events, not a lot can be gleaned about Dick Grayson’s training regiment. But cross referencing it with his style of crime fighting, his training history, and what he’s capable of - we can composite a semblance of what it might look like. When taking into consideration that Dick Grayson is the world’s best acrobat, the top disciple of the world’s finest martial artists and hand to hand combatant, and a masterful tactician in the field whose invincibility lies in defense - we can see him training for agility, functional strength and power, and flexibility. His physical training would be to improve the attributes which benefit his tactical athleticism. Though not included in this template, it’s important to note that, like Batman - Nightwing more than likely engages in training the increases his mental focus, acuity, discipline, and fortitude. And now that the theory’s out of the way, let’s jump into the practice. This is a pretty high volume Push/Pull Split that focuses on GST(gymnastic strength training) and hypertrophy strength training. The active recovery focuses on mobility and, if you’re avid, martial arts training. Push Workout (GST)

Conclusion
Dick Grayson is one of the most iconic characters in all of comicdom. With an amazing character progression and origin story, as well as being an all around badass, I’m hoping that the DCEU puts him on the big screen in the next couple years. While we’ll have to wait for the forerunners of the Young Justice League to make their rounds first, we can still workout like them. Who knows? With this workout’s focus Nightwing’s agility, strength, and tactical athleticism, one of you might be up for the role when he finally does hit the big screen.
